Heritage Library Card FAQ's
How do I get a library card?
Any resident of Dakota County can apply in person to any of the eight Dakota County Library Branches or South St. Paul Library. Acceptable identification with current address is needed.
Any of the following are acceptable for address identification:
• Drivers license
• State non-drivers I.D.
• Recently postmarked bill (either non-label or window type)
There is no fee charged in obtaining your library card.
Where can I use my library card?
Your Dakota County library card is valid for checking out all library materials (print and non-print) in all public libraries in the seven-county Twin Cities metropolitan area. Your library card is also good for checking out print materials in non-metro public libraries in Minnesota.
Who may pick up items held under my card?
Family members may pick up items reserved under your library card. This means that parents and children in the same household can check out materials for each other. A Request to Limit Reserved Materials form needs to be filled out if you do not want family members to pick up materials requested under your library card.
How do I replace my library card?
Damaged or lost Dakota County Library cards can be replaced at any Dakota County Library branch. There is a $2.00 processing fee for the replacement card.
What is a library card PIN number and how do I get one?
Your Personal Identification Number (PIN) allows you access to:
• Your library patron information - includes items checked out, items on request, your name, address and phone number, etc.
• Research Tools - free remote access to electronic encyclopedias, full-text magazine and newspaper articles, and other information sources.
The standard PIN assigned is the last four digits of your telephone number as it appears in your customer account. If this PIN does not work, you will need to come in to the library with additional identification, such as a driver's license, in order for us to check your record and furnish the PIN to you. You will then be free to change your PIN for security.
What happens if I move?
Please bring in your library card to the Dakota County Library with identification showing the new address. If you are moving from one part of Dakota County to another part of Dakota County, the address will be changed in your Dakota County Library account.
If you are moving out of Dakota County, your account will be updated and closed. You may then get a new library card at the library system serving your new address.
